Don't put away your Pride gear just yet -- National Coming Out Week is just around the corner! And our student organizers are marking it this year with a variety of fun activities!
In Madison, we'll be kicking off Coming Out Week with a showing of "Milk," which won eight Academy Awards this year including Best Actor for Sean Penn, who portrayed gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Students for a Fair Wisconsin-Madison is cosponsoring this event with UW-Madison's LGBT Campus Center. We'll be showing the film at 3 P.M. on Sunday, October 4th at the Play Circle in the Memorial Union. Hope to see you there!
The following Saturday, we'll be teaming up again with the LGBT Campus Center to host "Out in Politics," a panel of openly LGBT policymakers who will share their experiences being out in their professions and give advice to aspiring politicos. We're thrilled to have John Quinlan of "Forward Forum" fame as moderator for the event! The panel begins at 4 P.M. on Saturday, October 10th at Electric Earth Cafe (546 W. Washington Ave). Don't miss it!
Heather, our Chair of Students for a Fair Wisconsin-Whitewater, is planning to celebrate Coming Out Week with the screening of "Overruled" and delicious pizza. The documentary focuses on the 2003 landmark case Lawrence v. Texas, in which Texas Supreme Court justices struck down anti-gay legislation in a 6-3 vote.
Further north, Jeff at UW-Green Bay and his gourmet-chef peers are planning a bake sale throughout the week. If you're hungry, stop by to pick up some treats and donate to an outstanding social/advocacy student org!
