Reps. Tammy Baldwin and Barney Frank introduce inclusive ENDA!

Fair Wisconin applauds Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and Congressman Barney Frank for the introduction today of a federal inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) which would protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees from workplace discrimination. The bill, which enjoys bi-partisan support in Congress, would add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing federal employment non-discrimination laws. This is an important day for supporters of fairness and equality.

ENDA would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. It creates express protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people similar to those available under existing federal discrimination laws for other protected classes of workers.

Passage of this critical legislation would help ensure people are allowed to participate on a level-playing field in the workplace; ENDA lifts up the core American values of treating people fairly decently.

Currently, 12 states and more than 100 localities have LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination protections, covering nearly 40 percent of Americans. Additionally, more than 150 of Fortune 500 companies have enacted nondiscrimination policies protecting LGBT workers. These advancements have helped to protect workers in many places, but many more remain unprotected. Passing ENDA will go a long way to rectify this inequity.

Here in Wisconsin, we have a nondiscrimination law that covers our gay and lesbian citizens, but not people who are transgender. This legislation at the federal level would be an important step to ensuring that all Wisconsinites are treated fairly and we're so proud to have Tammy in Washington continuing to advocate for an inclusive ENDA.
